Bozeman, MT… The Gallatin National Forest has opened the South Cottonwood and Blackmore Trails starting today, October 10. These trails were closed at the end of August because of public and firefighter safety concerns resulting from the Millie Fire.
The remaining portion of the Millie Fire area closure still in effect includes the area beyond the junction of Storm Castle Road and Rat Flats and the Storm Castle Creek Ridge Trail (FS Trail #417). These areas are remain closed due to public safety concerns resulting from falling snags and rolling debris.
The 10,515 acre Millie Fire is now 90% contained. The fire continues smoldering in the East Fork of South Cottonwood near Mount Blackmore (below Alex Lowe Peak) and in the upper and southern portion of Storm Castle Creek (about 2 miles west of Divide Peak). The Forest is regularly monitoring the fire and has not seen any fire growth since October 3 when the area received some moisture.
