Special Message: The Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team will transfer command of the fire to a Type 3 Incident Management Team on Monday, August 20, 2012 at 6:00 am. The team would like acknowledge the great cooperation between all agencies involved in suppressing the Springs Fire.
Current Situation: Today firefighters will work to contain the remaining five percent of the fire and patrol and mop up of the remaining fire perimeter. Rehabilitation work will continue on the portions of the fire that are secure. On the south flank, straw waddles have been installed along the dozer line to prevent erosion.
With the predicted weather for today, there is no concern for an increase in fire activity on the Springs Fire. If a new fire happens to start, the likelihood that it could grow rapidly is very high.
Weather: A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm today. A cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms to the area with strong winds and abundant lightning, but very little rain. Temperatures will be 82 to 92 degrees with relative humidity between 12 and 22 percent. Winds will be 6 to 12 mph with gusts to 20 mph. As thunderstorms pass across the area wind gusts could reach 45 mph.
Public Safety: Although fire activity has diminished, several hazards still exist within the fire area. Trees damaged by the fire can fall without warning. Green trees can fall if their roots have burned and been weakened by the fire. Stump holes may continue to smolder for weeks and can flare up at any time. The public is asked to avoid the fire area at this time because there are stills crews working the fire, and they need to focus on their mission.
