The Ravalli County Emergency Operations Center has a public information phone number that interested parties may call at Ravalli County EOC 406-375-6650. The American Red Cross has established an evacuation center located at the First Baptist Church, 354 Cooper Lane, in Hamilton. That is 3 blocks east of Murdoch’s on the south side of town. The phone number for the sheltering and evacuation center information is 406-363-3735.
Today’s operations went well. The cooler temperatures and lighter winds allowed firefighters to begin line construction in North Fork Owings Creek drainage along with burnout of unburned fuel. This work will continue on Wednesday when crews construct line toward the Downing Mountain fire. Helicopters were active dropping water on this northeast flank of the fire. Helicopters also worked on the spot fires on the south side of Sawtooth Creek. Crews will be flown into this area of Sawtooth Creek on Wednesday and work on getting line around them. The contingency line on the north end is completed and has hoses and pumps ready if needed. Engines will continue to patrol the eastern edge of the fire during the night. Increased smoke may be seen in the fire area from Hamilton anytime burnout operations are underway.
Wednesday a dry air mass will enter the area with diminishing winds and warmer temperatures. Overnight temperatures will drop in the valley, but may be warmer at higher elevations. Inversions will occur with the stable air and winds of 4-8 mph at the lower elevations and 5-10 mph higher.
The stage 2 evacuation will remain in place and the Sheriff’s Office will daily evaluate the need for its continuation.
An information trailer on Highway 93 at Roaring Lion Road will be staffed as needed each day while this fire is active.
Closures: Sawtooth Creek Trail #123, Roaring Lion Trail #124, and Canyon Creek Trail #525, and Blodgett camp ground are closed due to fire activity.
Special Concerns: New fire starts! Attention: Stage 1 Fire Restrictions remain in effect for this area. Information on fire restrictions can be found at http://firerestrictions.us/mt/.
