Craters of the Moon will host the first-ever Run the Rift Fun Run that day – National Public Lands Day – to help fund field trips to the monument for area schools. Sponsored by the Craters of the Moon Natural History Association, the park’s official partner, Run the Rift offers a 5k and a 10k route along the monument’s scenic loop road. The registration fee is $35 with all proceeds supporting educational programming like field trips.
According to Superintendent Dan Buckley, the timing just seems right.
“Field trips have become harder for many schools to pay for in recent years. Since 2011 the park has acquired grant money to help schools offset some of these costs. The Run the Rift Fun Run will help us continue assisting schools with educational visits while providing a family-friendly experience in a fantastic setting,” said Buckley.
NHA Executive Director Rhonda Morris added, “Our non-profit organization is here to support research and educational programs at the monument. The board and I are excited for the event so we can continue that mission.”
Each year over 3,000 students visit the monument to explore the amazing features and study volcanic geology first-hand. Most classes visit in the fall and spring when trails and the lava tube caves are snow-free. SnowSchool, a popular option added several years ago to showcase the monument’s unique winter ecology, offers ranger-led snowshoe hikes for classes in the winter months, as well.
Run the Rift takes place on September 28th, National Public Lands Day, so no entrance fees apply that day. Registration for the event is required and limited to 150 people. The $35 fee includes a water bottle and running bib along with other prizes. T-shirts are guaranteed to those that register by September 14 – this Saturday. The last day to register for the event is September 21.
