Pendleton, OR: Public-use restrictions pertaining to the use of internal combustion engines, chainsaws and generators will go into effect at 12:01 AM on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 on the Umatilla National Forest, announced Brian Goff, Fire Staff Officer. Public-use restrictions on campfires and smoking are already in effect on the Forest.
The additional restrictions are being implemented due to increased fire danger, hot and dry weather conditions, and concern for public safety. “So far this season our conditions for wildfire have been lagging behind normal while other parts of the country have had numerous large fires,” said Goff. Local firefighters have been assisting with those off-forest wildfires, and though many local firefighters have returned home, firefighting resources within the region are still spread thin due to ongoing wildfires. “The hot and dry weather these past few weeks have caused conditions to dry out to where we are ripe for wildfires locally. Forecasted weather conditions are prime for wildfires and we really need to reduce the risk for human caused fires,” said Goff.
Beginning Tuesday, operating an internal combustion engine, such as a chainsaw, is prohibited. Firewood cutting is not allowed. This restriction applies to internal combustion engines other than a motor vehicle.
Generators will only be allowed in the center of an area at least 10 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material, or; when fully contained within a pickup truck bed that is devoid of all flammable material, or; when factory installed in a recreational vehicle and the generator exhaust discharge is located in the center of an area at least 10 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.
Under the current public-use restrictions, the following also apply:
- Building and tending of open campfires, including charcoal briquettes, cooking fires and warming fires are prohibited until further notice, except in fire pits at designated recreation sites (designated recreation sites are listed below.) Permissible sources for cooking or heat include pressurized gas BBQs, stoves and space-heating devices.
- Smoking is only allowed within enclosed vehicles, buildings, developed recreation sites or when stopped in an area cleared of all flammable material.
Regulated closures are in effect on State and private lands protected by Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) in northeast and central Oregon. Specific information on ODF’s restrictions is available on the web at: http://egov.oregon.gov/ODF/. Similar restrictions are in effect on State and private lands protected by the Washington Department of Natural Resources (WA-DNR).
