Fire managers are pleased with the progress in Kyle Canyon. The fire continues to back slowly down the ridge, where recent burnouts in Rainbow subdivision secured the fire edge. Hand crews in the Cathedral Rock Area are building line southwest down the canyon into an old burn scar.
Dozer and hand crews are working to contain the 300- to 400-acre slopover that crossed Kyle Canyon Road on Tuesday. Managers are confident these lines will hold.
Crews are clearing vegetation under the power lines along Kyle Canyon Road to widen the firebreak.
Firefighters have been assessing the structural damage in the Prospect Ranch area and will have more details soon.
Fire activity did increase in the southeast section of the fire in the Red Rock Conservation Area, expanding southeast onto Bureau of Land Management property. Fire movement is being driven by the steep terrain, independent of the winds. The fire has not crested the La Madre Mountains.
Hand crews conducted a small strategic burnout operation on the south section of the fire to further secure this line. Hotshot crews hiked into Spring Mountain to construct hand line and connect with the secure fire edge on the southern perimeter.
The communities of Kyle Canyon, Lee Canyon and Trout Canyon remain under evacuation. The James Bilbray Elementary School, located at 9370 Brent Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89143, is a designated Red Cross reception center. Public services such as information and mental health support are available. Clark County animal control is partnering with the Red Cross to help residents make arrangements for pets and large animal removal. A second reception center is located at Hafen Elementary School at 7120 South Hafen Ranch Road, Pahrump, NV 89061. Both centers are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The U.S. Forest Service issued an area closure for the Spring Mountain Recreation Area on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest on Tuesday at 8 a.m. The public is prohibited from entering Lovell Canyon Road (45537) at Highway 160, Trout Canyon Road (45576) at Highway 160, Lovell Summit Road (45536), Carpenter Canyon Road (45544) at Highway 160, Wallace Canyon Road (45081) at Highway 160, Bristlecone Trail, South Loop Trail, North Loop Trail, Griffith Peak Trail and all surrounding areas.
