BEND – Beginning tomorrow, the Deschutes National Forest’s Newberry National Volcanic Monument Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava Butte, and Lava River Cave will be open from Thursday through Monday.
On May 2, 2013 Lava Lands Visitor Center and Lava Butte, both located 10 miles south of Bend on the west side of Highway 97, as well as Lava River Cave, located 12 miles south of Bend on the east side of Highway 97 will open from Thursday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Beginning on June 13, 2012 the facilities will open daily.
Parking at the Visitor Center requires a recreation pass and there is no accommodation for oversized vehicles when the Visitor Center is closed. Parking at Lava River Cave requires a the same recreation pass or can be purchased for $5.
Visitors may access picnic sites, open trails and Lava Butte by foot or bike when the Visitor Center is not open.
