Once signed by the Forest Supervisor of the Lolo National Forest the projects will authorize the funding of the work under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 (SRS). On July 6 this year SRS was reauthorized for fiscal year 2012.
Under the SRS authority the Missoula County RAC has authority to recommend how Title II funds should be spent. Projects that qualify for Title II funding may occur on federal or non-federal land but must show a direct benefit to National Forest System lands.
The Act specifies that project objectives may include: roads, trails, infrastructure maintenance or obliteration; soil productivity improvement; improvements in forest ecosystem health; watershed restoration and maintenance; maintenance and improvement of wildlife and fish habitat; control of noxious and exotic weeds, and re-establishment of native species. At least 50 percent of all Title II funds must be used for projects that are primarily dedicated to road maintenance, decommissioning, or obliteration; or restoration of streams and watersheds. Most of the projects recommended by the RAC included work with partners as well as contributed funding by a variety of partners or agencies.
The recent projects recommended for funding by the Missoula RAC include:
Trout Unlimited willow planting and riparian restoration adjacent to Petty Creek -- $4,250.
Missoula Ranger District Rattlesnake National Recreation Area dispersed creek site rehabilitation -- $10,200.
Spotted Bear Ranger District Shaw Creek trail maintenance -- $17,200.
Missoula Ranger District aquatic invasive species education and awareness -- $1,900.
Ninemile Wildlife Work Group wildlife conflict prevention -- $10,000.
Aquatic invasive species education -- $1,900.
A complete list of the proposed projects can be found on the Missoula County RAC website at, https://fsplaces.fs.fed.us/fsfiles/unit/wo/secure_rural_schools.nsf/RAC/Missoula?OpenDocument.
