Firearms closures have been in effect for many years at the Ninemile Ranger Station. The new order increases the number of pastures and the length of time pastures are closed to firearms. The area remains open to archery hunting.
The firearms closure is in effect year round within the Ranger Station compound, the Grand Menard Day Use Area and Nature Trail, as well as the following administrative pastures: Lagoon Pasture, Tank Pasture, Ranger Station Hayfield, Mule Hill Pastures and the Tack Shop Pasture.
The revised portion of the firearms closure is in effect during the big game rifle season and includes the following administrative sites and pastures: Airport Pastures, Donkey Alley Pasture and the Hay Barn Pasture and Administrative Site.
“Every year at Ninemile, around 200 head of Forest Service horses and mules come in to winter” said Laura Johnson, Ninemile Resources Assistant. “This regulation will keep the stock safer during hunting season as well as our staff who are out there feeding and working with them.”
