Permits also are available by mail; the office address is 825 Avenue E, Ely, NV, 89301. Enclose a check or money order that is made out to USDA Forest Service (purchaser’s name and return address is required). Please allow one week for processing.
Christmas trees may be harvested on all of the National Forest, except areas that are designated as Wilderness or campgrounds. The district added five new Wilderness areas a few years ago, and the staff would be glad to explain where those areas are located. Note that trees cannot be cut anywhere in the Murray Watershed.
Directions to cutting areas and applicable maps may be obtained at the Ely office or by calling 775-289-3031. Information regarding regulations and conditions for retrieving trees are attached to the permit, such as:
· Cutting only white fir or pinyon pine;
· Cutting at least 50 feet from a road;
· Leaving a maximum of a four-inch stump (above the ground, not the snow surface);
· Cutting only whole trees under 15-feet tall; and,
· Scattering all slash.
Winter Forest visitors are always advised to dress appropriately, bring along emergency items such as chains, snow tires, a shovel, a first-aid kit, blankets, extra food/water, and tell trusted parties their expected cutting location and departure/return times. For more information, call the Ely Ranger District at 775-289-3031.
