Wisdom, Mont., Sept. 24, 2012 – The Wisdom Ranger District on the Beaverhead Deerlodge NF has announced that for the first time, the Gordon Reese Cabin at Chief Joseph Pass Cross Country Ski Area will be available for the public to rent during Dec. 1 through Apr. 15 ski season. The Gordon Reese Cabin has historically been reserved by the public on a first-come first-serve basis via a call in day the third week of October. The call in day will no longer take place and all reservations to stay at the Gordon Reese Cabin are to be handled through the www.recreation.gov web site or by calling (877) 444-6777. Currently, there are no proposed changes to the May 1 through Sept. 4 season.
By renting the cabin during the Dec. 1 through Apr. 15 ski season renters are expected to share the kitchen/living room area with anyone seeking to find shelter and utilize the cabin as a warming hut. Since the Gordon Reese Cabin at Chief Joseph operates in the unique position as a warming hut by day there will only be a $9.00 reservation fee assessed to overnight renters of the facility during this period. Reservations can be made six months in advance and the reservation system will only allow a person or group to rent the cabin for one night during the ski season. The Forest Service is attempting to provide as many nights as possible to the public at this very popular cabin.
Gordon Reese cabin has two double beds and four single beds with mattresses in the loft, and can sleep up to eight people. A wood stove is available on the main floor for heat and firewood is kept in the basement, along with emergency and solar power equipment and other supplies. The cabin is equipped with propane-powered lighting.
The main floor contains a well-equipped kitchen, two tables with benches, cupboard and counter space with stools and a variety of cooking and eating utensils. The kitchen has a propane cooking stove and a sink for waste water. Running water is not available at the cabin. An outdoor vault toilet is provided.
Guests will need to bring their own water for drinking, cooking and cleaning, as well as bedding, towels, toilet paper, soap, matches, food and other necessities. Guests must bring their own garbage bags and are required to carry out all garbage. The cabin must be cleaned prior to departure. There is no cell phone service in the area.
