The proposed project would upgrade and expand the existing 69 kilovolt (kV) electrical transmission line right-of-way on National Forest System (NFS) lands within the Gallatin River Canyon. The upgrade on NFS lands would consist of a 161 kV transmission line right-of-way running approximately 16 miles from Spanish Creek to Big Sky, MT. On an annual basis, current electrical usage exceeds capacity of the Jackrabbit and Ennis substations about 40 percent of the time. The project is being proposed to meet current energy demand, provide for anticipated growth, and comply with industry standards and customer needs.
A copy of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) can be downloaded from the Gallatin National Forest website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/gallatin. The DEIS is also available at the Bozeman Ranger District office as well as Bozeman, Belgrade and Big Sky public libraries. The DEIS evaluates potential effects of the proposed action, two action alternatives, as well as no action for Northwestern Energy’s rebuild and upgrade of the transmission line on NFS lands.
