HUNGRY HORSE, MONT. – The Hungry Horse and Spotted Bear Ranger Districts of the Flathead National Forest are requesting input on the proposed Betty Baptiste Project. The project area is located on the east side of Hungry Horse Reservoir, bounded to the north by Paint Creek, to the south by South Dry Parks Creek and to the east by the Great Bear Wilderness boundary.
The project would address multiple resource objectives, including: maintaining or increasing forest productivity, diversity, and health; providing commercial forest products for local communities; managing wildlife habitat; improving grizzly bear security; and improving fish passage by replacing or removing culverts. The project would also maintain or improve recreation values and safety in developed and dispersed recreation sites, and create or improve the scenic views along the Eastside Reservoir Road (NFSR 38). The following actions are proposed: 940 acres of harvest treatments, 71 acres of sapling thinning, 2.7 miles of temporary road construction, 697 acres of prescribed ecosystem burns, 3 miles of road berming, and 6 miles of road reclaiming.
For additional information on the project, you can visit the Flathead National Forest internet site at http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/flathead/projects, or contact the Project Leader, Michele Draggoo, at (406) 387-3827 for additional information.
Comments are requested by November 5, 2012, so that input may be included in the analysis. Comments will help the planning team develop a list of issues, which may in turn lead to development of alternatives to the proposed action. The planning document for this project is expected to be published in the spring of 2013.
Please mail your comments to Michele Draggoo, Hungry Horse Ranger Station, PO Box 190340, Hungry Horse, MT 59919. To submit comments electronically, please send to: firstname.lastname@example.org. Hand-delivered comments should be taken to either the Hungry Horse Ranger Station (10 Hungry Horse Drive, Hungry Horse) or the Spotted Bear Ranger Station (55 miles south of Hungry Horse on Road 38) between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Oral comments must be provided during normal business hours via telephone or in person.
