EASTERN FIRELINES HOLD FOR SAWTOOTH FIRE
TODAY’S ACTIVITY: The inversion thinned enough in the morning to allow air operations to begin sooner than previous days. The crews continued their efforts focusing on structure protection along the eastern boundary of the fire, as well as fireline construction and air operations in an effort to keep the fire from expanding into Roaring Lion or to the north into Barley Creek, with success in these efforts.
The fire made advances towards the west on the north side of Sawtooth Creek, with some spotting occurring towards the west on the south side of Sawtooth Creek. Most of the fire growth today occurred on the western edge into the wilderness.
A strong high pressure ridge will develop over the region for most of this week. This will result in warm temperatures but minimal winds. These conditions will help firefighters but heavy smoke will continue to linger in the valley all week. The weather outlook for Monday includes warmer temperatures up to the low 80’s, and low relative humidity. Winds will be northwest on the ridges up to 15 miles per hour.
PERSONNEL AND RESOURCES ON THE FIRE: There are approximately 422 personnel assigned, including 11 crews, 13 engines, 7 water tenders, 1 dozer, and 5 helicopters.
PLANS FOR TONIGHT: There will be a night shift again this evening, with firefighters patrolling the eastern edge of the fire closest to structures. They will perform mop-up and patrol, ensuring firelines are secure and the threat to structures continues to be diminished.
EVACUATIONS & CLOSURES: Stage 1 Evacuations remain unchanged from this morning. For information on evacuations, contact the Ravalli County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at (406) 375-6650.
Sawtooth Creek Trail #123, Roaring Lion Trail 124, Ward Mountain Trail #208, and Canyon Creek Trail #525 are closed due to fire activity. Blodgett Campground is also closed.
