The Bureau of Land Management's Rawlins Field Office is preparing an environmental impact statement and soliciting comments on a proposal to expand the Lost Creek Uranium In-Situ Recovery mine operations. A Notice of Intent was published today in the Federal Register, which opens the 45-day public scoping period.
On Sept. 29, 2014, Lost Creek ISR, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ur-Energy Inc., requested to modify their Lost Creek Uranium In-Situ Recovery Project, approved Oct. 5, 2012. The project is located approximately 40 miles northwest of Rawlins, Wyoming, and 15 miles southwest of Bairoil, Wyoming. The requested modifications would expand uranium production by ISR methods and increase associated milling facilities.
The proposed Lost Creek East would add a new project area totaling approximately 5,750 acres to the existing Lost Creek Project area of approximately 4,254 acres. The proposed KM Horizon would allow in-situ mining of uranium from the KM Horizon, and increase the extent of mining in the existing HJ Horizon in-situ recovery operation.
LCI also proposes to increase the overall production rate to 1.2 million pounds of uranium per year from the facility well fields, plus one million pounds of uranium per year from the toll milling resin or slurry from other off-site facilities. This would result in a maximum production rate of 2.2 million pounds of uranium per year. LCI also requested the BLM to consolidate operations and reclamation plans for the entire project.
Comments on issues may be submitted in writing until 45 days after the date of publication in the Federal Register. Dates and locations of any scoping meetings will be announced at least 15 days in advance through local media, newspapers and the BLM Website at: http://www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/documents/rfo/lostcreek.html. In order to be included in the Draft EIS, all comments must be received prior to the close of the 45-day scoping period or 15 days after the last public meeting, whichever is later.
Comments may be emailed to Lost_Crk_Mine_WY@blm.gov, faxed to 307-328-4224, or mailed to the BLM Rawlins Field Office, Lost Creek Amendments EIS Comment, P.O. Box 2407, Rawlins, WY 82301. For further information, please contact John Russell at 307-328-4252.
