This proposed project includes three Joint Management Areas: the Red Rock Joint Management Area (FS Red Rock WHB Territory/BLMs Red Rock Herd Management Area), Spring Mountains Joint Management Area (FS’s Spring Mountains WHB Territory/ BLMs Wheeler Pass HMA) and Johnnie Joint Management Area (FS’s Johnnie WHB Territory/ BLMs Johnnie HMA). Around 79 percent of the area is managed by the BLM, while around 21 percent is managed by the Forest Service.
The public meetings will be held in an open-house and public comment format with information available about the proposed wild horse and burro project. The meetings are scheduled from6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on June 25, 26, and 27 in the following locations:
· June 25 - Pahrump (Bob Rudd Center)
· June 26 - Good Springs (Good Springs Community Center)
· June 27 - Cold Creek (Volunteer Fire Station)
The public is asked to help identify potential issues regarding the proposal develop a Herd Management Area Plan for three complexes. This plan would verify and clarify Appropriate Management Levels (AMLs) within the Joint Management Areas. Current analysis shows that existing herd populations exceed AMLs. In these cases, a gather plan would be developed and also be analyzed. This analysis would be designed to achieve a thriving natural ecological balance between wild horse and burro populations, wildlife, vegetation, and water resources.
The USDA Forest Service published a legal notice in the Reno Gazette Journal on June 14, 2013, announcing the Notice of Proposed Action and Opportunity to Comment on the Spring Mountains WH&B Complex Herd Management Area Plan Project.
