SACRAMENTO, CA. - Today, California’s State legislature passed SB 350, legislation to promote 50% renewable energy in California by 2030 while also ensuring that buildings cut their energy use in half by that date.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“Today, California demonstrated once again that it is a world leader in tackling the climate crisis, protecting public health, and expanding the booming clean energy economy. Ensuring that renewable energy makes up half of all electricity sold in the state by 2030 is both necessary and eminently achievable -- and the significance of this move will echo around the world. The same is true of this new law’s move to double efficiency of energy use in buildings.
“This is a moment for hope and celebration, and significant praise is due to all those who helped achieve this important victory, including Senator de Leon and Senator Leno, Governor Brown, and the full California legislature. Working together, these leaders have given another major boost of momentum to the future of our planet ahead of international climate negotiations this December in Paris.”
