Butte, MT., October 20, 2015 – Unseasonably warm temperatures last Friday and Saturday allowed the Rocky Knob fire to increase from three to seven acres. Smoke was even seen from Whitehall, MT. The lightning caused fire located SE of Whitetail Reservoir was detected on October 11 and determined unsafe for firefighting personnel due to its remote location, steep rocky slopes, continuous dead fuels and zero safety zones.
“The wetter and cooler weather we have been receiving the last few days will certainly limit the fire spread at this time,” said Butte -Jefferson District Ranger Dave Sabo. “We will still continue to monitor the fire until it’s out.”
The Dillon Dispatch Center is aware of the fire as they continue to coordinate management of this fire with the Butte-Jefferson Ranger District. Additional information or questions can be directed to the Forest Service in Butte at (406) 494-0250.
