A Foundation Document revisits and updates the parks’ core mission and significance, most important resources and values, and the interpretive themes that tell the parks’ important stories. It is not a decision-making document and does not include actions or management strategies. Instead, it describes a shared understanding of what is most important about the parks.
This initial draft includes updated park significance statements, statements on the parks’ fundamental resources and values, and revised primary interpretive themes. Additional sections of the Foundation Document to be developed after this public review period will include a discussion of the parks’ special mandates and administrative commitments and an assessment and prioritization of data and planning needs.
The parks’ General Management Plan/General Plan was completed in 2000 for the four parks that make up Redwood National and State Parks - Redwood National Park, and Prairie Creek, Jedediah Smith, and Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Parks. A general plan for the Mill Creek Watershed addition to Del Norte Coast state park was completed in 2009. The final Foundation Document will reaffirm the purpose and values for which the parks were established.
Comments and recommendations regarding the Foundation Document will be accepted through August 25, 2015. They may be submitted by U.S. Mail to Dave Roemer, Deputy Superintendent, Redwood National Park, PO Box 7, Orick CA 95555 or online at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/RedwoodFoundation.
