Pedal United estimates about 30 participants for the organizations first year with an additional 20 spectators. “This is the first proposal for a winter mountain bike recreation event we have received,” said Traute Parrie, Beartooth District Ranger. “We are interested in public comment regarding the proposal, as the area receives a high level of interest and use during the winter.” Activities would take place on the existing West Fork of Rock Creek Road, which is groomed for cross-country skiing by Beartooth Recreational Trails Association (BRTA) through an annual winter use permit.
Currently the Custer Forest Plan (separate from the Gallatin Forest Plan) allows for motorized and non-motorized over-snow winter access on the West Fork of Rock Creek and the area is groomed and set with a cross country track, skate track and frequented by snowmobilers. All users respect and share the access for the groomed track close to Red Lodge.
Race organizers are responsible for all pre and post operational costs and preparation including trash, restrooms, parking, first-aid and communications. Comments regarding the proposed recreation event should be received at the Beartooth Ranger District by February 26, 2015, and should be substantive to the proposed event and are part of public record.
