ODFW staff and NW Steelheaders members will be present at the event to offer helpful tips to families and individuals who want to learn how to fish. ODFW will loan out rods, reels and tackle and provide bait to anyone who needs it. The event is free and open to the public.
“We are pleased to be working with the NW Steelheaders and City of Molalla to bring this event to Shorty’s Pond,” said Jeff Fulop, youth fishing event coordinator for ODFW’s North Willamette Watershed District. “Plans are shaping up for a great event and we encourage people to get out and take advantage of this opportunity.”
Shorty’s Pond is a relatively new stocked trout fishery in ODFW’s lineup of 38 Family Fishing Events around the state. The North Willamette district added Shorty’s to its stocked trout fishing locations last year following several years of site improvements completed through the combined efforts of ODFW, the City of Molalla, and civic organizations.
Shorty’s Pond is a 4-acre pond located with Ivor Davies Nature Park in in Molalla, across from Heckard Football Stadium. It can be accessed by the Fifth St. Trailhead.
The fishing is free for kids 13 years of age and younger. A juvenile license is required for anglers 14-17 years of age and can be purchased for $9 at any ODFW field office or retail license agents. Adults are also welcome to fish during the event but must also have a fishing license. Licenses will not be sold on site the day of the event.
