The Northwest Montana Forest Fire Lookout Association (NWMT) is co-sponsoring a fundraiser to help complete the restoration of Sex Peak Lookout (SPL). SPL is on the Forest Service Rental Program and needs some TLC! Two walls were replaced last summer and the remaining two walls will be replaced this summer. So, here’s how you can help! On March 26, the Cabinet Mountain Brewing Company (CMBC) in Libby is hosting Brews for Benefits from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and will donate $1 to the NWMT-FFLA/Sex Peak Project for every beer sold. The Northwest Montana Chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association (NWMT-FFLA) and Kootenai National Forest (KNF) are in the process of joining forces to restore and maintain fire lookouts across the Kootenai. The NWMT-FFLA is a non-profit organization operating through the North Idaho/Montana Chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association dedicated to supporting federal and state agencies in the restoration, maintenance, and staffing of fire lookouts and other historical support structures on public lands. Three years ago the NWMT-FFLA emerged when fire managers on the Hungry Horse-Glacier View Ranger District on the Flathead National Forest started the restoration process on two lookouts. In 2012, the district chose to staff these lookouts with volunteers. Volunteers not only staffed these lookouts but also participated in restoration work. Preservation efforts inspired a small group of lookout enthusiasts to form the NWMT-FFLA.
During the summer of 2015 the NWMT-FFLA will also participate in an on-site restoration analysis of Meadow Peak Lookout on the Libby Ranger District, KNF. Other restoration and maintenance efforts across Northwest Montana consist of projects on Jumbo and Mud Lake Lookouts within the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex on the Flathead National Forest, Little Napa Lookout on the Swan Unit of the MT Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), and Huckleberry Lookout in Glacier National Park. The NWMT-FFLA will also assist the Park in performing condition assessments on Apgar and Mount Brown Lookout.
