ROSEBURG, OR – January 31, 2014 – Forest Service personnel re-opened the Soda Springs Dam Road (Forest Road 4775-011). The road provides access to the North Umpqua Trail (No. 1414) and the Boulder Creek Trail (No. 1552) leading to Pine Bench in Boulder Creek Wilderness.
Soda Springs Dam is located on the North Umpqua River, about 60 miles east of Roseburg. The damage to the fish passage facilities occurred during a high-water winter storm last year.
Fish biologists counted more than 200 Spring chinook salmon above Soda Springs dam making at least 170 spawning nests in the North Umpqua River and another 60 redds in Fish Creek during the first full year of fish ladder access.
