Traffic along Highway 12 is reminded to keep moving and not stop along the shoulders of the road to view fire activity. Stopping or parking along Highway 12 in the Clearwater River corridor is not allowed. Idaho Department of Transportation is cooperating in the effort to keep the highway open. Firefighter and public safety concerns are paramount.
The stage 2 evacuation notice for residents along Highway 12 and Selway River Road has been downgraded to stage 1. This includes residents from Syringa to 5 miles east of Lowell along Highway 12. Stage 1 is a warning to affected residents to prepare to evacuate because of incident threats and hazards. The Selway River road is closed just beyond the entrance to Three Rivers Inn. Residents only will be allowed passage past this point. The order of closure of campgrounds and Forest Roads remains in place until further notice.
Morning Fire Update:
The burnout activity south of the Middle Fork Clearwater River and east of Decker Creek that took place yesterday was successful. This helps to contain the fire along this northwest corner and incorporates the large spot fire on the west side in Decker Creek. Additional burning is unlikely except for possible small amounts of ground ignition to clean up small areas of unburned fuels. Today’s efforts will focus on mop-up and monitoring along all suppression lines. This includes removing hazard trees along roadways and firelines, gathering equipment such as hose lays and pumps and returning them to camp, and making any additional improvements to constructed firelines. Equipment will remain at structures where it is determined to be needed.
An upper level weather system will bring cooler air to the area today, along with a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. We expect higher humidity and light west winds. Drier air will move over the area on Thursday. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity is predicted through the weekend. This includes the chance for heavier rains on Friday and Saturday.
The incident management team has been requested by the Forest to remain in place past their scheduled end of assignment to prepare for possible transition of management of the fire back to the District next week.
The stage 2 evacuation notice has been downgraded to stage 1 by Idaho County Sheriff’s Office.
