What: Nemote Fire Update
Location: 4 miles northeast of Tarkio, Ninemile Ranger District
Summary: The Nemote Fire was ignited by lightning on 8/25 and is located four miles northeast of Tarkio. The fire ran upslope rapidly yesterday and was burning actively on sides. Due to strong and gusty winds aircraft and firefighters were not able to engage the fire yesterday. Nine Smokejumpers hiked into the fire last night and began initial size-up and reconnaissance to develop a suppression strategy.
Planned Actions: A Type 1 helicopter on loan from the Lolo Creek Complex is currently on the Nemote fire and suppression is ongoing. Additional resources, including engines, are en-route and should be able to access the fire area with existing road system. A Type II crew and initial attack firefighters from the Ninemile and supporting ranger districts will bring initial attack resources to approximately 60 firefighters.

Resources: Nine Smokejumpers, one Type II crew, one Type III helicopter, several engines, approximately 30 initial attack firefighters from Ninemile and supporting districts

Terrain: Moderately steep hillsides, grass and scattered timber
Other Lightning Fires: The Ninemile Ranger District has responded to ten initial attack lightning caused fires between yesterday evening and this morning. Those other fire locations include the Quartz Creek and Pine Creek areas. No other fires have escaped initial attack at this time. Missoula district is currently responding to a half-acre fire in the Brewster Creek drainage 2.5 miles east of the Sawmill fishing access in Rock Creek, about 8 miles south of I-90. A type II helicopter and one helitack crew is currently on scene.
