Boating, rafting, swimming, or wading in the vicinity of the hatchery head gate is particularly dangerous due to the strong currents and turbulence. Many people enjoy walking the trails at the hatchery and cool water on hot days is inviting to both people and their pets.
“This is why we want to warn people of the potential danger associated with the dam during the spring when the run off flows are high,” said Hatchery Manager Al Jensen.
Tragic water-related accidents in years past highlight the need for extreme caution around these areas and Hatchery staff has taken steps to alert visitors of potential danger, including posting signs and issuing warnings.
People with small children or pets should be especially aware of strong currents and cold water, not only at the hatchery, but around any waterways, especially during spring runoff.
