A lawsuit and a motion for a temporary restraining order have been filed with the U.S. District Court of Wyoming to block the wild horse removal. As a result, the BLM will begin the removal sometime after Sept. 1.
This removal comes at the request of private land owners. Not removing wild horses from the checkerboard area would result in non-compliance with Section 4 of the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act and the provisions of the court-ordered 2013 Consent Decree between the BLM and the Rock Springs Grazing Association, which requires that all wild horses be removed from checkerboard lands within the HMAs.
