September 11, 2014 - The Goat Fire is burning in a remote and inaccessible section of the Goat Rocks Wilderness in the Cowlitz Valley Ranger District on Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The cause of the fire is undetermined; however the area did receive numerous lightning strikes in mid-August. The fire was first reported on September 7, 2014 and is estimated to be 6 acres in size.
“Public and firefighter safety are our top priorities and drive how we act to suppress this fire. Presently, there is no known threat to the public. Fire suppression resources will continue monitoring the situation and take action as needed”, stated District Ranger Gar Abbas. Fire personnel are actively scouting the surrounding area for appropriate locations to safely construct containment or contingency lines if needed. Fire personnel are also making daily weather and fire observations of the area.
Smoke may be visible from Highway 12 and occasionally the Packwood area. There are no fire related road or trail closures at this time.
