These closures are necessary for the replacement of two culverts on Shovel Creek. The existing culverts are undersized to handle the increased flows expected with the recent burned area surrounding the drainage. The increased flows would pose a threat to the road if the culverts are not upsized to handle the additional runoff. The Forest is installing the equivalent of 36” diameter culverts to replace the existing 15” culverts. Also, a French drain system will be installed to intercept an apparent underground spring that keeps the roadbed saturated throughout the year which produces ruts and soft spots. Included in the work are roadway re-shaping, surface improvements, curve widening, and ditch maintenance.
