Please note the Trail Closures and Area Closure described below for the West Fork Fire.
The West Fork Fire was reported on September 8th burning in the Eagle Cap Wilderness on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, in the West Fork of the Wallowa River drainage south of Wallowa Lake. The fire quickly spread, pushed by winds, through timber and dead and down fuels. The East Blue Mountain Interagency Type 3 assumed command of the fire yesterday.
The fire is being managed for suppression, while protecting wilderness values. The primary objectives are firefighter and public safety, minimize fire growth, keep fire from entering the urban interface around Wallowa Lake, and protection of resources.
The fire is currently mapped at 116 acres. Steep rugged terrain, including rock slides and avalanche chutes, is making it difficult for firefighters to contain the fire. Today two Type 2 crews and two Hot Shot Crews will continue to work to establish fire line along with natural barriers and previously burned areas to aid in stopping the spread of the fire. Firefighters will be using bucket drops from helicopters to wet fuels and knock down flames to allow firefighters work in heavy fuels, and control spread of the fire toward Wallowa Lake.
A Temporary Flight Restriction is being implemented in the air space for a 5 mile radius surrounding the West Fork Fire. This restriction also prohibits para-gliders and hang gliders in this air space near the fire.
Wallowa Lake State Park is being utilized as fire camp for crews. Please use caution in the area.
