The Duncan fire closure area to the west of Shady Pass Road remains closed for the protection of public health and safety. The Entiat River Road also remains closed north of the junction with the Entiat River to the boundary of the Glacier Peak Wilderness.
“We want to open this area as soon as possible but visitor and employee safety is our first priority,” said District Ranger Janet Flanagan.
The closed area was heavily impacted by the Duncan fire and is at a higher risk of experiencing debris flows. Often called mudslides, debris flows are water-saturated landslides that travel rapidly downslope carrying trees, rocks, and other debris threatening people and buildings in their path and cutting off roads. Debris flows have already occurred in the area and more may occur as a result of snowmelt and spring storms. Inspections of the area this spring will help determine when the area will be safe enough for public access.
