We are seeking your input on a proposal from Drifters LLC to purchase and remove saleable rock from an area within Rhoades Canyon, on the Duchesne District of the Ashley National Forest. The rock would be used for commercial construction purposes.
The proposal is to purchase and remove salable mineral materials from the north end of a “rock slide area” in Rhoades Canyon, located within or near the SW ¼ of SW ¼ of Section 3, T1N R9W, Uintah Meridian (see attached map). Access to the general area would be via the Rhoades Canyon Road (Forest Road #174). From the existing road, a 170-foot temporary access road is proposed for project-related vehicle traffic, over to the base of the rock slide area. At the base of the rock slide area, a 60 by 80-foot staging area is proposed for project use, as well as a 500-foot “temporary path” alongside the base of the rock slide area. Up to 2,000 tons of rock would be removed per year, for a period of up to 10 years. Collection of individual rocks would be done by hand, assisted by a rubber-tired telescopic handler or backhoe loader, to move rocks to the staging area. Removal of the rocks from the staging area would be pickup trucks or 1 to 2-ton dump trucks, via the Rhoades Canyon Road to State Highway 35, and then to the Drifters LLC stone yard. We anticipate that this project would be documented with an Environmental Assessment.
