Superintendent Vicki Snitzler of the National Park Service at Oregon Caves National Monument is pleased to announce that Poet Peter Sears has joined the Monument’s Artist in Residence Program. As part of the program, Mr. Spring will be hosting a public poetry writing workshop and reading at the Chateau at Oregon Caves on Sunday, September 7th, 2014. We are very excited to offer these programs to our visitors.
Peter Sears is the author of four full-length poetry collections – Tour, The Brink, Green Diver, and a new collection, Small Talk, from Lynx House Press this year. His second full-length collection, The Brink, received the Gibbs-Smith poetry prize and his poems have appeared in magazines and newspapers such as Saturday Review, The New York Times, The Atlantic, MotherJones, The Christian Science Monitor, and Rolling Stone, as well as such literary magazines as Field, New Letters, Iowa Review, Poetry Northwest, Antioch Review, Ploughshares, and Black Warrior Review.
“The selection committee was moved not only by the quality of Peter’s poetry, but also by his record of working with communities across Oregon and supporting writers,” said Adam Davies, the director of Oregon Humanities when Mr. Sears’ selection as Oregon Poet Laureate was announced.
The poetry writing workshop is scheduled from 2:00-4:00 pm. Reservations for the workshop can be made by calling the Chateau at541.592.3400. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of the Chateau’s Fall Special: book any room at the regular rate and stay a second night for a reduced rate of one-half off. Please make your reservation for the workshop and lodging by September 5th, 2014.
Following the workshop, Peter will be reading from his work in the Chateau Lobby at 7:00 pm. The workshop and reading are free and Peter’s books will be available for purchase at both events.
These events will be a wonderful opportunity to see the Monument in a new and different way and to stretch your creative muscles.
