The Fraiser Creek sub-division, which contains about 40 structures, is within ½ mile of the fire, but fire on that flank was knocked down last night by water dropping helicopters. Today crews will work to build fire line and further secure that area.
Garden Valley and Horseshoe Bend rural fire departments have nearly 2500 feet of hose, along with engines and water tenders to help protect the sub-division. Valley of the Pines rural fire department is assisting in the effort.
Resources fighting the fire this morning include 5 hand crews, two dozers, three Forest Service/Contract engines, and three helicopters.
There is no estimate of containment established. Highway 17 is now open, but travelers need to use caution due to the potential of rock fall onto the road.
The fire is burning in grass and timber. Accessibility is an issue due to few roads in the area, and very steep terrain. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but likely person caused.
