The U.S. Forest Service authorized and permitted the avalanche control system for use by the Colorado Department of Transportation last fall. The system is expected to be in use for the winter of 2015-16.
The “remote preventative avalanche release system” will be located on the Arapaho National Forest in a notorious avalanche shoot known locally as the Stanley Slide, which crosses U.S. Highway 40 in two locations on the east side of the pass. This area is known to release significant avalanches that have, from time to time, closed the pass for days.
