Due to extreme fire danger, the BLM had restricted firearm shooting in late June in the North Hills, located 10 miles northeast of Helena. Officials with the Butte Field Office said there were three fire starts in the North Hills in June—two were due to individuals shooting incendiary rounds at targets, and one was from a campfire.
“While shooting is again allowed with the cooler weather, we want to remind the public to be careful while in the North Hills because there is plenty of vegetation in the area and conditions can change quickly this time of year,” said Butte Field Office Manager Scott Haight.
The use of incendiary or tracer rounds and exploding targets is not allowed at any time on BLM lands, he added.
