The mine dumps would be removed from unpatented mining claims in the Norris Road area on the east side of the Scratchgravels. The material will be screened and crushed on site and then hauled to either a custom mill in Virginia City or the Golden Sunlight Mine east of Whitehall for final processing. The public should expect to see increased traffic along Norris Road for the duration of the project.
Minimal road improvement on public land is anticipated. The area will be reclaimed upon completion of the project.
Although levels of metals in the waste rock may be somewhat elevated, the concentrations will not pose a public health issue. Following processing, waste material will be placed in a lined, permitted tailings facility at the Golden Sunlight Mine or the custom mill in Virginia City.
The BLM is processing the applicant’s plan of operations in accordance with federal regulations. If the operation is approved as submitted, removal would begin after Feb. 20 and would be completed early this spring.
The Plan of Operations is available for review at the Butte Field Office, 106 N. Parkmont in Butte.
