The purpose of the construction is to make the public parking area and building facilities accessible to people with disabilities, as well as address security issues.
It is anticipated that construction will occur from late June through mid-October. Until construction is complete, a temporary reception area will be available to the public in the southwest corner of the current building.
“Our temporary reception area will be much more limited than our normal reception area,” said Northern Hills District Ranger Rhonda O’Byrne. “This will impact the level of services we will be able to provide during this time period. We will not have the capacity to provide materials such as brochures for trails, area attractions, mountain pine beetles and the other the information we normally make available in our foyer. However, most of these materials will be available at other local Forest Service offices and some of these may be available at the Spearfish Chamber of Commerce.”
The District Office will continue to sell trail, firewood and other forest product permits and some maps. “We understand this situation creates inconveniences to the public and our employees” said O’Byrne. “But the end result will be a facility that is more accessible for people with disabilities and will provide a safer and more secure facility for our employees.”
