The Banana Lake Fire is located 30 miles northeast of McDermitt near the Oregon/Idaho border.
The fire was started by lightning on Friday August 10th. Initial reports had this fire growing to 10,000 acres but the fire perimeter has been more accurately mapped and now stands at 4960 acres. Flare-ups occurred throughout the day but firefighting resource kept this fire within the established perimeter.
Due to the complexity of these two fires, expected weather next week, Northwest Team #3, a Type 1 management team, will take over management of this complex on August 12th. They will establish their base of operations at the McDermitt Rodeo grounds. Over 100 personnel are currently working on this complex of fires. Additional resources have been arriving on the fires throughout the day.
