Forecast: Red Flag Warning today. Minor cooling expected for today as a weak trough passes by to the north. Increasing moisture will bring a chance of showers and dry thunderstorms during the late morning through evening. Warmer and drier weather expected for Saturday and Sunday.
Remarks: There was quite a bit of activity on the west, south and north eastern sides of the fire. The fire in the Trail Creek area put up a large column of smoke that was visible from the town of Stanley. Additionally the fire spread east towards the Valley Lakes area. The 15-acre Morneo fire was detected just south of Indian Springs guard station. The Bench Fire was detected around 3pm on Thursday and is approximately 70-acres near Banner Summit. Highway 21 was closed and remains closed as of this morning due to the fire. The Highway 21 closure will be reassessed today at noon. There was minimal activity at Vanity Summit, with single trees torching every so often through the heat of the day.
The Halstead Fire Emergency Area Closure (Order Number: 04-13-12-521) went into effect August 3, 2012 for all access points to the Cape Horn Area, all access to the Seafoam Bubble, all access to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness (FCRONRW) that is east of the Middle Fork Wild and Scenic River Corridor, east of Bluebunch Ridge, and north of Lola Creek, National Forest lands north of Hwy 21 & 75 to Sunbeam and west of Yankee Fork Road to Loon Creek Guard Station. The Pinyon Peak Road in its entirety is closed. Highway 21 is also closed at the 579 Boundary Creek Road, and at Grand Jean. The Boundary Creek Road is open for access to the Middle Fork.
The following CAMPGROUNDS are closed due to the fire closure: Beaver Creek Campground, Lola Creek Campground, Marsh Creek Transfer, Josephus Lake.
ALL ROADS and TRAILS within the closure and forming boundaries of the closure area are CLOSED.
The above described area is within the proclaimed and administrative boundaries of the Middle Fork and Challis-Yankee Fork Ranger Districts, Salmon-Challis National Forest and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
Prevention Message: Fire danger on the Salmon-Challis National Forest is HIGH. Although the Forest currently does not have any fire restrictions in effect, we are asking visitors to use precaution at all times. Please make sure your campfires are completely dead out prior to leaving your campsite at any time.
