Current Size: Approximately 6,599 acres
Activity Update: Fire spread has been reduced considerably due to precipitation, cooler temperatures, and light winds. The peat bog in a drainage ditch near the Westside road continues to smolder, but heavy equipment and fire engines have been working daily on it.
Current Resources: There are 82 personnel assigned to the fire. This number will be reduced tomorrow as today is the last shift for the Fairbanks crew. The Type 3 helicopter remains assigned to the fire for reconnaissance mission. With the national preparedness at the highest alert level, virtually all firefighting resources nationwide are assigned to wildfires. Planned Actions: Logging operations on the Westside Road will be in full swing today as loggers work to remove hazard trees.
For safety reasons, the public is encouraged to avoid this area for the next few days. Engines will be patrolling for hot spots and assisting with extinguishing the hot spot that continues to smolder in the drainage ditch. Air and ground resources will continue to scout the area. The Incident Management Team, agency representatives, stakeholders, and resource advisors will continue to assess rehabilitation requirements for the burn area. Slope stability, sediment transport, and road prism integrity are among issues that will be addressed.
Special Messages/Closures: The Stage I Alert has been lifted that applied to residents in the Kootenai River Valley from Trout Creek to the north on the Westside Road, and from Copeland to Porthill on the Farm to Market Road and west of Highway 1. For information on other fires in the region, please contact the joint information center in Coeur d’Alene at (208) 765-7383 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Officials and law enforcement would like to encourage residents to sign up for emergency alerts by text at http://www.nixle.com/. The Westside Road north of Copeland Road is open to local traffic only, as a significant number of hazard trees have fallen across the road.
Closures remain in place for Parker Ridge Trail #221, Fisher Peak Trail #14 and the Long Canyon Trail #16. No other closures are in place, but that is subject to change. We appreciate the public’s help in assisting with safety efforts by reducing speed on public roads around Highways 1 and 95, and throughout the fire area.
