From April to September in 2013, the Forests sold approximately 2,000 commercial mushroom permits at a total value of $67,820.00.
The Forests are issuing commercial mushroom permits again this year at all forest offices starting April 1, 2014. All commercial harvesters, 12 years of age or older, will be required to pay the permit fee. Proof of identification is required for issuance of all permits.
Permits will only be sold during regular office hours Monday through Friday and will not be available at local vendors. The forests are not issuing buying permits and buying stations will not be permitted to operate on-Forest.
Only seasonal permits will be available and the cost of a seasonal commercial permit is $100.00. This permit is valid from the date of purchase until August 1, 2014.
Commercial mushroom gathering is only allowed in designated areas, outside of wilderness areas. Harvest permits are district specific. A Commercial Use Mushroom Guide is available at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5417810.pdf.
Following are the designated commercial mushroom permit areas:
• Red River Ranger District - (McGuire Fire Areas 1, 2 and 3) and (Porcupine Fire Area 1)
• Powell Ranger District – (Weasel Fire Area 1) and (Fern Fire Area 1)
No commercial mushroom picking season on the Salmon River Ranger District (Sheep Fire) this year due to safety issues with ongoing roadside hazard tree salvage logging.
Permit area maps with designated camping sites are available at all forest offices and posted at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/nezperceclearwater/passes-permits.
Please note that Personal Use Mushroom gathering is not restricted to designated areas, and use may overlap.
Camping will only be allowed in designated locations identified by the Forest Service and governed by terms and conditions detailed in the commercial camping permit. Camping permits are $20.00 per individual, district specific and are issued separately from mushroom permits. Camping permits can only be purchased at the district offices. Camping permits are valid from the date of purchase through August 1, 2014.
Other important permit conditions are: no heavy equipment or raking is allowed, harvest of mushrooms is limited to hand picking, and motorized vehicles are not allowed off existing roads that are open to the public, unless otherwise specified within the permit.
The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests want to provide access to commercial mushroom harvesters, while ensuring public safety. Be aware of varying forest conditions while traveling adjacent to and entering into burned areas.
