Public Meeting Notice A public meeting to provide an update on the fires burning in NE Washington will be held this evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Spokane Community College Colville campus, 985 S. Elm St., Colville, WA.
Fire lines on both the Marble Valley and Gold Hill Fires have been tested the past two days by winds from multiple points on the compass and have withstood the challenge. Interior burning continues, but the fires have remained within the established control lines. Firefighters were able to continue their holding and mop-up operations yesterday have increased the estimated containment on the Marble Valley Fire to 75% and on the Gold Hill Fire to 50%.
“There has been an amazing amount of work accomplished with very limited resources to reach the point we’re at today,” Operations Chief Greg Chandler proclaimed at this morning’s shift briefing. “Success on the Marble Valley Fire would not be at this point without the cooperation and efforts of Fire District 5 and 7 resources. We have done this work with no injuries and under challenging burning conditions.”
Today’s operations will continue to mop-up the control lines and around structures within the perimeter of the fires. The winds associated with the passage of yesterday’s cold front have subsided with a warming and drying trend forecast for the weekend. Mop-up work will extinguish all heat sources within 100 feet of the fire’s perimeter and within 200 feet of any structures. Residents and landowners of the fire areas are cautioned that driving produces more serious accidents on wildfire incidents than any other factor. If you are driving on roads shared with fire traffic, please slow down, use your headlights, drive defensively and expect the unexpected.
