WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. House of Representatives today passed H.R. 2042 sponsored by long-time climate denier Representative Ed Whitfield (R-KY). The bill is an effort to delay and derail the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan, due to be finalized later this summer.
In response, Earthjustice issued the following statement from our president, Trip Van Noppen:
“Today’s vote in the House is yet another example of how polluters in the oil, gas and coal industries have rigged our democracy to funnel money into their own pockets by blocking clean energy solutions.
“We cannot continue down the perilous road that polluters have paved for us. Searing heat and dangerous flooding are becoming the norm because of ever-increasing carbon pollution that contributes to extreme climate impacts and crippling drought. It is time that we forge a new path, take back our democracy and fight for a better world for our children and ourselves.
“The Clean Power Plan that the EPA will finalize later this summer is an opportunity to move toward the clean energy future that we all deserve. The Whitfield Bill and other attempts by polluters and their allies in Congress to block progress on climate and undermine clean energy solutions must ultimately be defeated.”
