EFFECTIVE JANUARY 15, 2015:
1) NO RETENTION OF CHINA, COPPER, OR QUILLBACK ROCKFISH
2) BLUE ROCKFISH DAILY SUB-BAG = 3*
*(no more than 3 blue rockfish, as part of 7 fish marine bag limit)
These changes are not included in the 2015 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations for the Marine Zone (page 92), but will be available in the 2015 Oregon Sport Ocean Regulation phamplet that is published in late April or early May and contains finalized Pacific Halibut and Ocean Salmon seasons.
These changes are being made to ensure maximum fishing opportunities for the main species caught in the sport bottomfish fishery, such as black rockfish and lingcod, that typically comprise 95% or more of the total catch.
Without these changes, there would be a high chance that the mortality of the these rockfish species (China, Copper, Quillback, and Blue Rockfish), which make up only 5% of overall catch, would exceed the newly reduced federal quota for this species group. If the quota were to be exceeded, then closure of the entire sport bottomfish could possibly occur.
A comprehensive and detailed rockfish identification guide is being developed to assist anglers. For now, rockfish identification guides can be found on page 99 of the 2015 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations or on the ODFW website:
